Searching 8: I always get a "Host refused connection" error when I try to use Reference Manager’s Internet Search, even for connections that do not require a subscription, or the connection always times out. My computer is behind a firewall. How can I fix this?

Answer: To connect to a remote database from behind a firewall, you (or your network administrator) must open ports to allow communication through the firewall. Most, but not all, z39.50 connections use port 210. Check the host settings to identify the port used for that connection. Open this port on the firewall and you should be able to connect to and search the remote database.

Note: If the connection requires a subscription, you would need to verify you can access the z39.50 server from this computer, as the authentication requirements of the database to which you are connecting can vary. For example, if you have an Ovid subscription, Ovid may require an authenticated IP and/or a username and password, depending on what your institution has purchased.
