Network 1: With the Network Edition, we're getting a message that the maximum number of concurrent users has been reached. How can we fix this?

Answer: To fix this problem in the short-term you can clear the user count by simply launching the Concurrent Metering Utility on the server (netcount.exe) and clicking the Clear button. You can only run netcount.exe directly from the server itself. If you are on a different machine you can access netcount.exe, but you need to create shortcut to this file and modify its properties. First create the shortcut on your machine. Then right-click the shortcut, choose Properties, and click on the Shortcut tab. Add the following string to the end of the path listed under Target so that the path reads something like this:

"C:\Program Files\Reference Manager #N\Program\NetCount.exe" /ADMINMODE (name of application).EXE

The important thing here is to add the /ADMINMODE followed by the filename of the program executable (either RM12n.exe, RM11.EXE, WINRM10N.EXE or WINRM9N.exe depending which version you have). Then click OK. Now you should be able to run the Concurrent Metering Utility through this shortcut.

If you still have trouble look in the directory containing the database for a *.loc file. The .loc file is a locking file that the network program places in the database directory to let Reference Manager know how a user has opened a database. The file stores information about the users access to the file such as Read/Write or Read/Exclusive. This is what the program uses to "lock" other people out of the database when the file is in Read/Write Exclusive mode. If the program is terminated abnormally, the .loc file will not be cleared out and you won't be able to open the database. Using Windows Explorer you must browse to the folder that contains the database and delete the .loc file (it will have the same name as your database).

Make sure that the netcount file is in a read/write area for all the users accessing the program so that this error will not occur again. If one user opens the program and doesn't have write access to the netcount.ncg file then that service will not be released and the file will remain open and not clear itself when the user logs off. Also make sure that all of your program users are shutting down the program correctly; abnormal termination causes the user count not to be reset.
