11:
What level of user rights (e.g. User, Power User, Administrator) does Reference Manager require to install and run correctly? |
|
Answer:
In order to properly install, your user account must have administrative rights to the local machine (meaning it must be a member of the "Administrators" group in the local security database). You cannot install while logged in under an account that is a member of the Windows groups "Users" or "Power Users".
However, once the program has been installed under an account with administrative rights, other accounts on that machine can run Reference Manager 11 if they first run the "Configure Reference Manager" utility. This can be run either by selecting the "Configure Reference Manager" shortcut on the Start menu under the Reference Manager 11 program group, or you can run it by double-clicking the file called "RefManConfig.EXE" located in the Reference Manager 11 program folder.
After running this file, you should be able to run Reference Manager 11 even if the program was not installed under your account and even if your account does not have administrative rights.
One issue which members of the Windows group "Users" may encounter even after running the "Configure Reference Manager" utility is that by default they do not have write access to the Reference Manager 11 program folder. This will cause errors when they try to open or create a database in this folder (including the Sample database that comes with the program).
To avoid these problems, grant such users write permissions to the Reference Manager 11 program folder and subfolders, or install the program to a location where Users do have write permissions.
