Database 4: How can I move, back up, or transfer my database to another computer?

Answer: To back up your database(s) and move them to another computer:
  1. Close the database in Reference Manager.

  2. Using Windows Explorer, go to the folder that contains your Reference Manager database.
There should be two files for every Reference Manager database: a *.rmd file (main database file) and a *.rmx file (index file).

  3. Make sure to transfer both files to the destination computer. The method you use to transfer those files is up to you (floppy disk, CD, zip disk, network share, email attachment, etc.).

  4. On the destination computer, copy both files to the folder on the hard drive where you will be storing your Reference Manager databases. The *.rmd file and the *.rmx file need to be in the same folder in order for the database to open up in Reference Manager.

  5. Depending on the method you used to transfer the database, the read-only attribute of the *.rmd and *.rmx files may be checked. To remove the read-only attribute, right-click each file, select Properties, and uncheck the Read-Only checkbox.

  6. You should now be able to open the database in Reference Manager.
