Database 11: Why do the number of references in my database not match the Reference ID numbers for my references?

Answer: The Reference ID number is the unique database number assigned to a reference when it is created. This number is never reused in the same database, even if you delete the reference that was originally assigned this number. So, if you have a database of 100 references and delete all of these references, then create a new reference in this database, the Reference ID number of this new reference will be number 101, even though it is the only reference in the database.

It is common to have the Reference ID numbers not match up with the number of references in your database, this can happen if you delete a duplicate reference for instance.
