21:
I'm getting an error that says an attempt was made to access an unnamed file past its end. What does this mean? |
Answer:
A number of things can cause this error. One possible cause for this error is if the document was moved between different versions of Word without first reverting to original text. To resolve this:
- First save a backup copy of your document.
- Place your cursor at the beginning of the document and make sure you have no text selected. From the Tools / Reference Manager 9 menu select Revert to Original Text. Choose Author/Date/RefID as the format and make sure the delimiters are set to { and } for the left and right delimiters.
- When it stops on the first one and asks you to Confirm revert select Revert All.***
- When it says it has finished searching the document click OK.
- Now select Tools / Reference Mananger 9 / Scan Document. Under "Scan For" select Identifying Text. Make sure the left and right delimiters are set to { and }. Under "Options / Look In:" click on the Browse button and locate the database you wish to use with this document. Check the box to Generate an updated bibliography. Then click OK.
- If all of the citations can be unambiguously located in the database the program will scan the document and then prompt you to select an output style to generate the bibliography. If it finds any citations it cannot resolve it will stop and a window labelled "No matching records" will pop up showing the identifying text that it cannot match. If this happens check your database for the record in question and verify that the author, date, and RefID EXACTLY match the record in your database. You will likely find that the RefID is different or that the author name is mispelled. You can either make a correction to the identifying text and click Insert or you can click Ignore and this citation will remain in its reverted state and will not be included in the database. You can then go back after the Scan completes and then delete and reinsert this particular citation.
- After the Scan completes you should be able to generate bibliography without errors.
*** If you get the error again when you try to revert then there is some corruption in the document. One way you can identify the problem citation(s) is to place your cursor at the beginning of the document and choose Unformat Citations from the Ref Man tools in Word. Usually this will stop and give you an error message when it comes to the problem citation which it will highlight. If your screen does not show the citation just click the left or right arrow key and the screen should jump to the cursor which will be next to the problem citation. If you can locate the citation that is corrupt, delete it and then try to revert. If you cannot locate the corrupt citation you may have to try the following:
- Press CTRL+A to select all.
- Press CTRL+6 to clear out all field codes.
- Save a copy of the document.
- Create a new blank document.
- From the Insert menu choose File and insert the file you just saved.
- Now proceed with step 5 above.
